ACCESS TO JUSTICE PROJECTS

Access to Justice

Access to justice is critical in ensuring that people are able exercise their Human Rights.  Many people, especially in rural areas, are so poor that they cannot afford to pay the fees involved in attending court. Additionally, many people do not have the legal knowledge necessary to effectively present their cases in court. For these reasons, iPeace believes that providing free access to justice is critical to the protection of Human Rights and the preservation of human welfare.

iPeace's first solution to any case is to offer mediation support. When this is not beneficial, iPeace will assign lawyers to provide a client with free legal consultation or defense, as needed. Each year iPeace receives an average of 325 cases, but only 90 can be treated due to financial constraints.

Human Rights Education

Human Rights should be respected, promoted and protected. However, for this to happen, people must first know their rights so that they can demand them when needed. As a means of educating people on their Human Rights, iPeace organizes Human Rights training sessions. Since the majority of the community that iPeace serves is illiterate, the most effective strategy for teaching vulnerable populations about their rights is to verbally communicate those provisions of the law most related to the issues frequently faced within these communities.
iPeace believes that the most fundamental Human Right is to know the rights you are entitled to by law -- including procedural and substantive law. For instance, when a woman in a rural area knows that the Constitution grants 30% of decision-making posts to women, that woman is able to demand her inclusion in sector councils or to question authorities when she finds that this quota is not respected.
Each year, iPeace organizes several training sessions for the members of our target communities in order to empower these individuals and give them the tools necessary to claim their rights.

HUMAN RIGHTS EDUCATION PROJECTS
Good Governance Education
Good Governance is key to a stable community. Among other things, Good Governance implies that local authorities are transparent and that they promote people's participation in the decision-making process.
Most local authorities do not have the Good Governance knowledge needed to most effectively serve their communities. iPeace tries to bridge this gap by providing basic training to local authorities at the cell, sector, and district levels with the goal of teaching Local Leaders the core principles of Good Governance that should be applied daily.

Peace Building and Reconciliation

Peace building and Reconciliation are crucial in restructuring Rwanda post-1994 and in rethreading Rwanda's social fabric.
To assist with Peace building and Reconciliation, iPeace's conducts trainings for community members with the overall goal of strengthening social cohesion. For example, iPeace works with youth to provide necessary knowledge and skills on non-violent dispute resolution mechanisms. iPeace is also currently working to establish Youth Peace Clubs in all secondary schools in Rwanda.
